The best-known Tunisian date is Deglet Nour, a golden date that looks almost translucent when you hold it up to the light. In Malaysia it is often called "kurma tangkai", because it is usually sold still attached to its branch. At AlSultanFood, Deglet Nour is not sold in our online shop at the moment. We supply it to businesses by the carton, on enquiry only. This page explains what Deglet Nour is, how to choose and store it, and which dates you can buy from us online instead.

Tunisian dates: where Deglet Nour comes from

Deglet Nour comes from Tunisia in North Africa. The Arabic name is usually translated as "date of light", which fits its looks: held against the light, the flesh glows golden and slightly see-through, sometimes enough to show the outline of the stone.

You will usually find Deglet Nour in two forms:

  • On the branch (kurma tangkai): the fruit is still on its natural stem, packed in a box or tray. This look is popular for serving guests and for festive seasons.
  • Loose: dates taken off the branch and packed in boxes or cartons for everyday use and for the trade.

Taste and texture

Deglet Nour is a semi-dry date. The skin is thin and smooth, the flesh is firm yet tender to bite, and it is not very sticky in the hand. The sweetness is natural with a light, honey-like note, less intense than very soft and sugary dates such as Medjool.

Because the flesh is firmer, Deglet Nour slices and chops neatly. That is why bakers, kuih makers and food businesses like it, as well as people who simply eat dates by the handful.

How people use dates on the branch

  • For guests: lay a branch or two on a tray at a kenduri, wedding or open house.
  • For iftar with water, milk or coffee.
  • In the kitchen: date cake, pudding, porridge, granola and sauces.
  • Stuffed: split and fill with almonds or other nuts for a special plate.
  • In Ramadan and Hari Raya hampers and corporate gifts.

How to choose and store Deglet Nour

Look for fruit that is golden to light brown, with whole skin and no mould. Semi-dry dates can naturally show a few sugar crystals on the skin; this is normal for dates kept cool for a while.

Store them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Once the box is open, move them to an airtight container or keep them in the fridge so they stay soft for longer.

General goodness

Like other dates, Deglet Nour is a source of fibre and natural energy. Breaking the fast with dates is a sunnah many people love to follow. Enjoy them as part of a balanced diet.
