Black seed honey (madu habbatus sauda) brings together two foods that are close to the hearts of Muslim families in Malaysia: honey and black seed. At AlSultanFood, our Madu Habbatussauda is not sold as a jar on its own. Instead, it comes FREE with every Olivko olive oil bundle, and it is part of our Sunnah Gift Box Sets A, B and C.
This page explains what black seed honey is, how it tastes, how people usually enjoy it, how to store honey, and which AlSultanFood products come with it.
What is black seed honey?
Habbatus sauda is the Arabic name for black seed (Nigella sativa), a small black seed long used in cooking and tradition across the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa.
Black seed honey usually means one of two things:
- Black seed blossom honey — honey made by bees from the nectar of black seed flowers.
- Blended honey — honey mixed with black seeds or black seed oil.
Both are sold as black seed honey or madu habbatus sauda. The best way to know which one you have is to read the label on the jar.
Honey and black seed in Sunnah tradition
Honey is mentioned in the Quran, and a surah is named after the bee: Surah an-Nahl. Black seed is mentioned in the hadith. That is why both are often counted among the Sunnah foods, together with dates, figs and olives.
For many families, a jar of black seed honey in the kitchen is part of daily life and a meaningful gift, especially during Ramadan and Hari Raya.
Taste and texture
The taste of black seed honey depends on the type and the source of the honey. In general:
- It is darker than ordinary flower honey.
- It tastes sweet with a slightly bitter or peppery finish.
- Where whole seeds are added, they give a light crunch and a distinctive aroma.
- It is thick and may crystallise over time, which is a natural process for honey.
How people usually enjoy black seed honey
- A spoonful straight from the jar in the morning.
- Stirred into a glass of warm (not boiling) water.
- Spread on toast or pancakes.
- Drizzled over oats, yogurt or fresh fruit.
- Stirred into a warm tea or herbal drink.
- Eaten with Ajwa dates or dried figs as a simple Sunnah snack.
General note: honey is not suitable for babies under one year old.
Real honey in Malaysia: tips for choosing
Many shoppers look for madu asli, genuine honey. A few general pointers:
- Buy from a supplier whose company name and address are clear.
- Read the label: product name, ingredients, origin and expiry date.
- Crystallised honey is not a sign of fake honey; it happens naturally.
- Home tests such as the water-drop or flame test are not reliable proof.
How to store honey
- Keep it at room temperature, somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight.
- There is no need to refrigerate it; cold speeds up crystallisation.
- Close the lid tightly after use.
- Use a clean, dry spoon so no water gets into the honey.
- If it crystallises, stand the jar in warm water and stir gently until it turns liquid again.
