Figs in Islamic tradition

The fig is mentioned in the Quran, and a whole surah is named after it: Surah at-Tin, which opens with "By the fig and the olive". That is why figs are often counted among the Sunnah foods and are a favourite in many Muslim homes in Malaysia, especially during Ramadan and when guests visit.

Many people like to serve figs with olive oil and dates, a simple and meaningful trio of Sunnah foods.

  • 250g — to try them, or a week of snacking for one.
  • 500g — for the family, or a few weeks of buka puasa.

How to pick good dried figs

When buying dried figs, look for:

  • Soft, slightly chewy skin, not hard and woody.
  • An even golden to light-brown colour.
  • A sweet, fresh smell, with no sour note.
  • Even sizing, a sign the figs have been graded.
  • Dried figs sometimes have a fine white coating on the skin. This is usually the fruit's natural sugar coming to the surface, and it is normal.

How to store dried figs

  • Close the jar tightly every time you open it.
  • Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from sunlight.
  • After opening, keep the figs in the fridge so they stay soft and fresh for longer, especially in hot weather.
  • If the figs firm up, soak them briefly in warm water before eating or cooking.
  • Please check the expiry date on the packaging.

Serving ideas with figs

  • Eat them as they are, or at buka puasa with dates.
  • Chop them into morning oats, yogurt or cereal.
  • Stuff them with almonds or pistachios for guests.
  • Slice and serve with cheese and bread for an easy breakfast.
  • Bake them into cakes, bread, muffins or festive cookies.
  • Blend into a smoothie with banana and milk.
  • Arrange on a guest platter with Ajwa dates and cashew nuts.

Dried figs for Ramadan and gifting

During Ramadan, many families set out a small plate of dates and dried figs for buka puasa. Their sweetness is a gentle start before the main meal, and their soft texture is easy for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Dried figs also make a well-loved gift for parents, teachers and friends, especially paired with dates, nuts or olive oil. A 1kg jar can be split into small containers to share with neighbours during the festive season. For ready-packed options, see our hampers, or WhatsApp us for large corporate orders.
