Many people search "safawi vs ajwa" and "safawi vs mariami". In short:

• Safawi and Ajwa are both dark dates from Madinah. Ajwa is better known because it is narrated in hadith, while Safawi is often chosen as the everyday Madinah date.
• Safawi and Mariami: Mariami comes from Iran, ranges from reddish to dark brown, and is soft, chewy and more mildly sweet. Safawi is denser, with a balanced sweetness.

How to spot good Safawi dates

Wherever you buy them, these signs help:

• An even dark colour, with no fuzzy white spots (a sign of mould).
• Lightly wrinkled skin is normal, but the fruit should not be rock-hard or crumbling.
• A clean, sweet date smell, never sour.
• Soft when pressed gently, but not wet or overly sticky.

A few sugar crystals on the skin can appear on dates kept cool. This is normal and does not mean they have gone bad.

How to store Safawi dates

Keep them in a cool, dry, closed place away from sunlight. Once opened, move them to an airtight container or the fridge so they stay soft for longer. If you keep them chilled, take them out a few minutes before eating.
