Medjool is one of the easiest dates to recognise. It is much bigger than most other dates, with golden-brown to dark-brown, lightly wrinkled skin and thick, soft, moist flesh.

The flavour is rich and sweet, with a caramel-like taste. The texture is soft and chewy, almost melting in the mouth. Because the fruit is so large, a single Medjool already feels satisfying — perfect for breaking your fast or as an afternoon snack.

Compared with Ajwa dates, which are smaller and gently sweet, Medjool is bigger and sweeter. Compared with Sukkari dates, Medjool is meatier and chewier. Many families like to keep both at home.

How to store Medjool dates

Medjool dates are moist and fleshy, so good storage keeps them at their best:

• Keep them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
• Once the box is opened, move them to an airtight container.
• For longer storage or in hot weather, keep them in the fridge. Take them out a few minutes before eating so the flesh softens again.
• Check the best-before date on the pack.
